Ever thought of what’s the purpose of dreams, love or grief?  A  Toddler Walks into a Bar is a fiction novelette that will make you think deeper about the realities of life. There are five (5) stories in this book with distinct themes – grief, war, perseverance, love and loneliness. book review by Niibookreader Book Description: A little boy named Coy loved drinking tea,but one day, his tea was not ready.  It was not on the table like how it always was. So he decided to wait, and wait, and wait. When he could not wait any longer, he tried many other things to keep himself busy, but poor Coy faced so many challenges along the way. His day was nt going well, and he wondered what he could do to make it better. What will Coy do next? General Thoughts: The first thing I wondered about this book was “Who’s Mr.D?” and the answer I discovered was unexpected. I never thought a 32 paged children’s book could bring me close to tears. Written in playful rhymes paired with charming illustrations the author was able to tackle important topics about mental health, specifically Depression, and the importance of having a good support system to help cope with the battles we fight in our heads. I think it’s a good way to expose children to mental health whether because they them...

Sentido Comun by Sedfrey Lopez Cabaluna

Image
book review by Lao Lesangke An artist, philanthropist and written masterpieces are best described for the book Sentido Comun. Common sense not in a literal sense but transforming and changing our mindset by being sensitive to the changes and happenings in our community. Speeches and articles are very timely. Some of which were translated to different Filipino slangs. The height of the pandemic, problems encountered in our community. The forsaken low-class and the richer upper class has drawn a variance in his write ups. Constant reminders from our elders were also discussed and believed to have made the author inspired from the generations that have existed before, transforming into learnings that exist and might exist in the years to come. This book discuss resentment, disappointment in today’s society. We unveil all circumstances and effects that we’ve experienced for the past years. How it tramples our past, present and future. Unbothered by society’s opinion and judgments. Mr. Caba...

Sealed by Glenn Carlo Eroles

Image
book review by Jason Paz Sealed is a short story about Ordell Phage, a freelance photographer from the fictional town known as Lavis City who’s just trying to make ends meet. And just like any creative artist, he has his own fair share of deep-rooted trauma that leaves him seeking refuge by talking to his therapist and his friends. Plagued by cryptic dreams because of his shattered past, he embarks on the journey of questioning the truth of his existence and defining the core of humanity. Ordell’s forte is taking stock photos, generic and unimposing, yet fits perfectly with the theme of the story. Glenn Carlo Eroles’ Sealed touches on the philosophical question of what is true and real, and like the stock photos Ordell takes, our reality has always been subjective to each person’s unique interpretation of the external world, and no one can ever take that away from us. As feeble our notion of reality might be, there will always be choices we could’ve chosen that would lead to different ...

The Empowering Book Series By: Emiliano M. Manahan Jr.   Imagine being in the shoes of a disabled man named Caloy. Caloy is someone who was infected with polio at a young age. For him, it is challenging to afford a wheelchair, whose average cost ranges from 3000 to 7000 pesos or even higher. With the little money he makes from selling cigarettes and candies, the access to one is impossible with a limited budget.   Every day is an uphill battle because the city is not accommodating towards people with needs like his. Not every building has wheelchair ramps, and even in public transportation, and people would hog elevators that are meant for PWDs. He also wonders where to get the money when he gets sick or how he’ll get to the hospital. The stigma that comes with not being able-bodied, also chips away at his morale. He feels as if his daily struggles are insignificant to the world.    Caloy is just one of the several members of the invisible m...
